Black Bear Realty

"Keeping NH Green"

Black Bear Realty agents love working and living in the Mount Washington Valley.  The things that make the White Mountains so attractive to our clients and us are the things that we are committed to maintaining and preserving.   The Realtors Code written over 65 years ago begins, "Under all is the Land!”  We know the value of conservation and would love to work with you to find your piece of the beautiful land and preserve it for future generations.

Here are some simple things you can do to help keep the White Mountains GREEN!

  • Buying an existing home is the best way to minimize your foot print.  Recycling an older home and totally renovating it has 1/10th the impact as new construction.
  • Be land smart, if you are developing a lot.  Take the time to walk it with your Black Bear agent and discuss house placement.  By having your home conform to the land instead of conforming the land to the house is a smarter way to build.
  • "Cutting trees is a good thing." Want to promote wildlife around your property?  Cut some trees.  Sounds strange don’t it.  Well most animals and birds look for open areas with lots of sunlight and fresh green shoots (not an over-fertilized weed free lawn.) and grass to visit.  Turkeys, Red Fox, Rabbits, Goldfinch, Blue Birds, Purple Finch & Owls & even Moose & Deer, need pasture to graze and hunt prey.
  • Get a bright idea!  Never buy another incandescent light for your new home!  New CFL's are cheaper, more efficient and last longer.  Make sure you buy quality CFL bulbs, as not all bulbs are the same.  Look for the "Energy Star" label and 10,000 hours or more of burn time.  That’s a lot of hours for about $3.00!
  • Plant natural shrubs and flowers in you gardens in an addition to the standard nursery stock, High Bush Cranberries, Bittersweet, Blueberries, Gaillardia, Echinachia, & Gay Feather are all easy to grow plant that will bloom with little or no fertile or care and will feed the local wildlife as a bonus!   We can recommend local nurseries that offer a good mix of plants and shrubs or you can order from the NH department of forestry.

  • The #1 renovation is a new Kitchen.  Counter tops have a huge impact, so why not make a green impact.  Locally, you can get custom pine counters at Home Grown Lumber or a myriad of colors with recycled glass at Bert’s Glass in Chatham.  Also consider dyed concrete, stainless steel or mature bamboo from Dick Check, at Country Cabinets.

  • If your home were a vehical what would it be? A Mac Truck or a Toyota Prius?  It is as easy as making one phone call to change your heating from #2 Residential Oil to BIO Fuel.  Reliable Oil & Propane can handle the change over and it doesn't usually cost anything.  So what are you waiting for?
